REA: Rib eye area measured by ultrasound at the 12th rib.

Rib eye/ 100 lbs. : Rib eye area per 100 pounds of body weight. This is a good number to use to compare the bulls. In the industry 1 inch per 100 lbs. is considered acceptable, anything above that is considered good. All the bulls on the test had well over 1 inch per 100.

Marbling: Marbling score measured by ultrasound. Marbling is the fat deposited in the muscle which adds flavor and juiciness to the meat. Scores between 5-7 are Choice grade.

Back Fat: Measurement in inches of the fat cover over the 12-13 rib.

Frame: Frame score based on a height measurement over the hips. Frame score is a good predictor of mature size and a good indicator of finished steer size. Frame is highly heritable.

Scrotal: A measurement in centimeters of the testes size. Scrotal circumference is highly correlated to sperm output and fertility in daughters. For 12-14 month old bulls 30-24 centimeters is considered good, greater than 34 is considered very good.
